Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a conceptual protocol for clinicians that strengthens their skill in performing extraoral and intraoral esthetic diagnosis and structural evaluation and gives them the tools and language they need to communicate more effectively with the other members of the treatment team. Furthermore, DSD allows clinicians to educate and motivate their patients, enhances their patients' visual perception, and ultimately increases case acceptance.

 

 

The whole concept is based upon the analysis of the patients facial and dental proportions, utilising a predetermined series of high quality digital photographs and videos. Analysing them provides a unique understanding of the relationship between teeth, gums, lips, smile with the facial features in motion and with emotion.Digital drawings are easily made on the pictures, following a didactical sequence and a digital ruler is provided to precisely communicate with the dental technician and team when designing the smile. Resulting in a clear, attractive and understandable treatment presentation for patients.The achievement of ideal aesthetic and functional results critically depends on teamwork, interdisciplinary communication and case re-evaluation.Finally the communication data can be stored in the cloud facilitating the access of any team member to add important clinical observations.

 

 

 

Christian Coachman, a talented Brazilian Dentist and Dental Technician started developing  the DSD Concept after realising that some issues during diagnosis have to be overcome. Issues such as communication and treatment planning interfered negatively in the treatment outcomes, even in highly skilled teams around the world.

 

 

With the idea to develop the DSD protocol to help dental professional teams all over the world,  Dr. Coachman iscurrently introducing a new face of dentistry. A new face that is  more human, more emotional and moreartistic. Furthermore his idea was to enhance this noble profession in society, with the purpose of providing healthy and naturally beautiful smiles that greatly affects peoples quality of life and their self-esteem.
